日本出発前にマサケイが旅行計画を立てた時の資料で、実際は、現地で変更したこともあり、必ずしも、ここに記した旅行計画通りに旅行していません。
【マサケイの計画】
サフォード（Safford）（アリゾナ州）に、田舎の素朴なキャンプ的温泉宿を見つけた。エッセンス・オブ・トランキィリティ（Essence of Tranquility）という名前の宿だ。持ち主（クラリス：Clarisse）に宿泊を打診すると、「ここはヒルトンのようなのじゃなくてキャンプ場だ（this is a campground, not the hilton or such）。共同トイレ、共同炊事場（キッチン）です。それでも良ければどうぞ」とのことだ、マサケイは、むしろそういう温泉宿を経験したい。２泊するが、昼間は街に行かないで、温泉につかっていよう。
なお、サフォード（Safford）に行く途中、チリカワ国定公園（Chiricahua National Monument）の観光を計画し、少し調べた。ところが、日本を出発する前に調べていると、「Chiricahua National Monument is closed Thanksgiving day.」とあった。つまり、行く予定の日は、丁度、休園日である。すでに宿は予約してしまった。従って、行程も変更困難だ。単純に「行かない」ことにする。仕方がない。

While the rooms are nice and have beds, linens, microwave, mini fridge and coffee makers they do not have restrooms, there are shared ones on the property. The price also includes use of the communal kitchen and living room and use of the mineral waters.

● “Quiet Rustic Resort”
I love this place! Have been there numerous times, and always enjoy the quietude, hot springs, clean air, and simple comfort.
Do not expect the same amenities as in a chain motel. This is a RUSTIC resort.
Here is what you will find:
Several small cozy cabins (redesigned from storage sheds, I guess) for two-four people (there is also a bigger one, with loft beds, for a larger company), with fans, A/C and heating, clean comfortable beds, mini fridge, coffee maker and microwave in each room; communal kitchen with a large fridge, gas stove, dishes, pots, pans and utensils; lots of BBQ grills throughout the property (bring your charcoal). Drinking water provided. Restrooms and showers are communal but kept very clean. Furniture is rather old (is it called “antique”?) but also clean. There is also camping area with a couple of tent pads and picnic table. Each cabin has TV and VCR player, large selection of tapes available in the office for rent (free of charge). There is a communal living room with board games, books, sofas, chairs, large dining table and TV.
But that’s not what people come there for. The major attraction are of course hot springs. There are six pools total, with temperature varying from very warm to quite hot, with constantly running water. Every week, pools are completely emptied and sanitized.
Five of these pools are private – that solves the unwanted nudity problem common at hot springs locations. An open pool is larger and cooler. Each pool is decorated with its own theme, has lights, chairs, and clock to monitor time.
For the guests staying at the property, the use of hot springs is unlimited. Otherwise, one can rent a tub for $5 per hour. There are restrooms, showers and day use area available for day visitors.
Massage therapy, aromatherapy and reflexology sessions are available for reasonable charge by prior reservation.
The owner, Clarisse, is accommodating and tries her best to make your visit enjoyable. Overall, the atmosphere is very laid-back and relaxing. Well behaved pets are welcome, dogs must be on a leash.
Now, what you will not find on this property:
Annoying maids that are making your bed every day so tight that you have to fight to pull a blanket from under the mattress; no wake-up calls, no lines and courtesy clerks, no nasty “motel” smell, no noise and car exhaust. At most, you will hear horses, cows or peacocks, but mostly singing birds.
Area attractions: Discovery Park, Mt. Graham (drive up to the top for cooler temps), UofA observatory (tours need to be reserved two weeks in advance), Black Hills Rockhound BLM area (free search for fire agate), lots of wineries @ Wilcox, Chiricahua National Monument, Whitewater Draw nature preserve, old mining towns Bisbee and Clifford, fishing (Roper Lake and Riggs Lake).
This place is good for couples, families with kids and teens, solo travel as well as for friends and family reunion.
Best time to visit: any season, even in summer if you can stand the outside heat (but it is cooler than in Phoenix or Tucson.)
Nearby, the city of Safford (and nearby Thatcher) has all amenities of a normal city – large grocery stores, restaurants, gas stations, auto repair, and several chain hotels and motels.

Take this with a grain of salt. This is not for the normal resort goer, you have to be “down” with an experience that consists of the atmosphere of a trailer park and possibly a Minuteman neighbor with holstered gun (very friendly, but something out of Reno 911), but beyond that slight unusualness the lady groundskeeper and another neighbor were extremely lovely and helpful, the individual hot tubs were great, and since we went there during the week, there was maybe two other families there and no one else. We had our PICK of hottubs and could go from one to another. Stayed in one of the smaller cabins, a spruced up woodshed pimped with a queen-size bed, air conditioning, little fridge, coffee maker and television. Totally fine. You can usually schedule a massage as well from the owner or her sister, but when we were there, we were too late for scheduling and never actual met the owner.
I gotta say, travelling across country, we were lucky to find the place, and you can also hang out at Roper State Park and lake across the way, for a little barbecue and swim beforehand. Try this place for something if only to have something to tell your friends and family about.

I’ve been here many times. As for Albert’s comments. I don’t now what casita “tuff shed ” Albert stayed in but I have stayed in all of them. They all are clean. and all have comfortable beds. The bathrooms are always clean. The communal kitchen is is fully stocked with pot pans everything you need to prepare your own meals. maybe even potluck with your other fellow campers.
I don’t what Albert expects for $60 accommodations but I am happy.

The water is very nice. The baths are private and deep. A little primitive, but worth the visit. The accomodations, the owner is careful to let you know you are “camping”, consist of a not so clean Tuff Shed with a bad bed for $60.00 a night. The advantage is that by staying there you have as desired access to the baths, otherwise you pay for a 1 hour visit. You can tent camp there, but the communal kitchen and bathrooms are just short of disgusting. I’m sure I will visit again as a day guest for the baths, but would not stay there.

チリカワ国定公園は、火山の噴火により出来た山だそうです。確かにここの岩は、周辺の砂漠の赤土とは明らかに異なる黒褐色をしています。触ってみると意外と脆い部分があり、どうやら風化しやすい性質の岩のようです。どんな種類なのかまでは分かりませんが。長い年月を経て、水・風・氷により侵食され現在の奇妙な形に至ったと考えられています。
比較的湿気が多いためか、岩に緑色のコケが生えているのが特徴です。このコケに光が当たるとまるで輝いているように見え、黒褐色の岩とのコントラストがきれいです。
