泊まっている宿・トラベロッジ・ホールブルック（Travelodge Holbrook)からフェニックス（Phoenix）まで、と近い。移動の途中、トント国定公園（Tonto National Monument）を見ていこう。
フェニックス（Phoenix）（アリゾナ州）の宿はメトカーフ・ハウス（The Metcalf House)に2泊する。ここはユースホステルである。米国のユースホステルに泊まるのは初めてだ。欧州・豪州のユースホステルは10か所以上宿泊したことがあるので、マー、なんとかなるだろう。ユースホステルは、ピープルウォッチングと国際交流にとても良い。米国のユースホステルの数はとても少ない。内陸では、ここだけではないだろうか？ このユースホステル「Metcalf House」は評判が良い。
中日はどうするか？ マサケイは歌を歌うのが好きだ。「歌うこと」と「楽器」・「歌を聞くこと」は違うけど、マー、音楽というくくりで、楽器博物館（Musical Instrument Museum）に行こう。多分、ここで1日過ぎてしまう。日本出発前、この中日の夜7時から楽器博物館でコンサートが開催されることを知った。切符を購入しようかどうしようか迷ったが、現地で考えよう。

“Really good hostel”

HI Phoenix is not particularly walking distance to anything but only a one minute walk from the bus stop, which will get you downtown in about 10 minutes.
Extremely friendly staff, clean facilities and a good breakfast.
I just have one gripe – they have a ‘no shoes in dorms’ policy and so I arrived back at my room one day to find my shoes on the front step. I’d understand if they were sneakers or whatever, but they were a pair of Ralph Lauren ballet flats that I’d worn once and clearly weren’t going to stink out the dorm. I felt a bit miffed that they’d been put outside for anyone to take! (It is a very safe hostel with a great, friendly atmosphere, but you still never really know what people are like.)
Anyway, I had a great stay and would stay there again but next time I’d hide my shoes!!

This was the second time I have stayed in this hostel (10 years between) and it was awesome both times. The staff and everything about this hostel are simply the business. We got lifts into town in staff pickup truck, woke in the mornings to a private female vocalist concert, free BIG breakfast of fresh home made pancakes and i can go on and on and on…. I unfortunately fell in with a bottle of Jamesons and fell out with (read: into) a cactus. That is the only slightly negative thing about Phoenix I can think of. Tempe is beautiful (but expensive) and the weather, ahhhh, the sun…

●“フェニックス美術館”

ここは、収蔵作品が1万7000点以上にも及ぶアリゾナ最大の美術館。
総合美術館でかなりのものが揃う。ドルチの2作、グルーズの珍しい自画像、コローの4作、バルビゾン派のディアズ・ド・ラ・ペーニャのヴァトーに見紛う道化師の絵、ヴュイヤールの見事な室内画、森村泰昌のモナリザの背景に妊婦のモナリザ風のヌードの絵と、岩窟の聖母の背景に前絵の妊婦の腹の中を見せた絵等が印象に残った。
アリゾナの鉱夫の家に生まれその生活を多く描いたルー・デイヴィスと、彼と2人でアリゾナ初のアートセンターを設立したフィリップ・カーティスが地元の画家として気を吐いていた。
フィリップ・カーティスはシュール・リアリズムに基づき、マグリットを感じる所もある。彼の絵をまとめてみることが出来るのはフェニックス美術館だけのようで、特別に1室が宛がわれていた。
