ニューメキシコ州のトゥルース・オア・コンシークエンシィズ（Truth or Consequences）からサンタフェ（Santa Fe）へ移動する。途中、アルバカーキー（Albuquerque）の街を見てから宿に行く。宿泊はサンタフェ（Santa Fe）の高級和風温泉宿・萬波（Ten Thousand Waves)に2泊する。この萬波は、今回の旅行で一番高価な宿である。温泉を楽しみたい。
宿泊客はどの風呂も無料で使えると思っていたが、無料は共用が１つ、女性専用が１つだけで、個室風呂は有料だった。マー、いいけど。と思っていたが、サイトを良く調べると、2013年12月1日ー19日は、特別に、宿泊客は有料個室風呂に無料で1泊当たり1回入れる。ラッキー！ マサケイ姫の一言、「この時期、閑散期なんだね」。
萬波（Ten Thousand Waves)は、サンタフェ（Santa Fe）から車で20分と近いので、日帰り利用者が多く、温泉は結構混雑するという評判である。
宿から、123 km、1 時間 40 分に、世界遺産のタオス・プエブロ（TAOS PUEBLO）がある。2泊するのだから2日目の昼間に行くには丁度良い距離。しかし、クチコミを読むと、評判よくない。多分行かない。マサケイ姫の一言、「世界遺産って、どうってことないよね」。
2日目の昼間は、サンタフェの美術館に行こう。

アルバカーキの観光地といえば、アルバカーキ発祥の地「ヒストリック・オールドタウン」という歴史ある小さな町。まずはここに行ってみた。
ここへはバスでも行けるそうだが、手っ取り早くダウンタウンからタクシーを使った。
10分ほどで到着。
アドービと呼ばれる日干しレンガでできた建物が立ち並び、ネイティブアメリカンの文化が残っている。
サン・フェリペ・デ・ネリ教会。オールドタウンの中心にあるアルバカーキで一番古い教会だ。真っ青な空とアドービの建物のコントラストが素晴らしい。
教会の中は写真撮影が許可されている。
「アルバカーキ博物館」の近くには西部劇のようなオブジェが。入館してみるとニューメキシコ州のトラディッショナル＆コンテンポラリー・アートのコレクションが展示されていた。でもちょっと退屈だったかな。
アルバカーキはオールドタウン以外は治安が良いとは言えない。
Central Ave.という大通りでも、閑散としていて、女性一人で歩いていると心細かった。
ダウンタウンの駅周辺にも行ってみたが、昼間でも寂しい場所で足早に戻ってきた。

日本人には有名な、エルドラドホテルの向かいにあります。入場すると、カバン等を預けるロッカーがあり、係員による説明等も受けられます。
チケット購入時に「どこから来たの？」と聞かれ、「日本」と答えると、「ニューメキシコへようこそ！」と言われました。日本人は、あまり行かないのでしょうかね？
ジョージア・オキーフの絵はそこそこ知っているつもりでしたが、「人物画を描くことが嫌い」だったオキーフが描いた人物画も何点かあり、少し驚きました。このせいか、有名どころの絵ばかりでなく、多面的にオキーフ作品を見れた気がしました。

“ジョージア・オキーフ美術館”
2011/12/04に投稿しました
美術館はこの街に多い薄茶色のレンガ色のこじんまりした箱形の2階建て。1階の左側に展示室、右側に売店、2階はオフィスになっている。
ジョージア・オキーフ(1887-1986)は、後に夫となる写真家のアルフレッド・スティーグリッツに認められて世に出た。
官能的な印象を受ける植物の絵で人気になったが、エロティックだと言う批評を逃れ、ニューメキシコの荒野の風景に新境地を開いた。1997年にゆかりの地であるニューメキシコ州サンタフェに「ジョージア・オキーフ美術館」がオープン。
スティーグリッツの死後はニューメキシコに籠り、ひたすら絵を描いた彼女の作品の大部分はこの美術館の所蔵になっている。
今年5月の訪問時に展示されていたのは油彩49点、水彩8点、パステル2点、素描14点、彫刻1点、オキーフの写真22点、内1点はカラー、風景写真9点だった。オキーフの使った絵の具、筆、クレパス、パステル、色見本も展示されていた。
ここは撮影禁止。観客も看視員も多い。せめて入口に掛かっているオートバイの後部座席に乗ったオキーフの写真を撮ろうとしたらそれも駄目で、代わりにその写真の絵葉書をくれた。

3.Please do not photograph tribal members without permission.
4.Absolutely no photography in San Geronimo Chapel.
5. Do not enter the cemetery which also holds the ruins of the old church. An adobe wall surrounds this area, this is the boundary.
6.Do not enter the river ? our sole source of drinking water.
7.And last but far from least, as we welcome you into our home please respect it as it was your own home. There are rules in place to ensure a great visit for visitors and to ensure the culture and traditions of our home are maintained and kept in tact.

“昔ながらの質素なコミュニティ”
街からは車まで5分ほど。入口で入場料とカメラの持ち込み料を払って、入場。
入口近くにオキーフの絵で有名な十字架があり、これが頭にあって訪ねたのだが、ここだけがやけにきれいで浮いていた。
その先は昔ながらの質素な建物が続き、周囲は野犬が多い。昔の生活を知る意味では貴重だが、あまり雰囲気がいいとは言えず、長居はせずに街に戻った。

“日程に余裕があれば”
インターネットで、空いている事を確認、電話でも確認して行きましたが、急な葬儀の為、中に入れず、覗くことすらできず。追い払われる様に帰ってきました。こう言った事が起こりうるので、日程に余裕あればどうぞ。入り口の方の態度に非常に不愉快な思いをして帰りました。

“雪のタオス・プレブロ”
標高が高く、冬ともなれば寒さの厳しいエリアですが、雪が降ればまた趣きある風景に。
レンタカーのナビにタオス・プエブロの登録がなく、観光インフォメーション・センターでもらった簡易の地図を頼りに向かいました。道路は、車の往来で雪が溶けているのでスパイクタイヤでなくとも問題なし。
到着したら、入口で入場料とカメラ使用料をお支払い。カメラ用に小さいタグをもらい、それを持参のカメラに付けてから中へ入りました。
冬、しかも雪ということで、タオス・プエブロを訪れる人の数はまばら。住民も屋外に出ることは少なく、じっくり見学していると、時折、広い空間の中で動いているのは自分一人になったりします。雪に吸音効果があるのか、怖いくらい静かになるときも。
太鼓を売っている店、アクセサリー店など土産物屋は数軒あり。一番奥にあるRED HILL FLOWER SHOPでは、店のお姉さんがブレスレットについているチャームのひとつひとつに意味があることを丁寧に教えてくれました。
夏のイメージが強いタオスや近隣のサンタ・フェを、冬に周遊するのも悪くないものです。ただし、天候が悪化して吹雪にならなければ・・・ですが。

I know I may come across as harsh in this review but it is my opinion. Our family of four was traveling through the Santa Fe/Taos area this past August and decided to take a tour of the Taos Pueblo. On arrival you are greeted by friendly locals allowing you to park for a “tip” fee. they were very friendly and we gave them more than you would normally pay for parking and they were very greatful. We were then directed to a window where you find out about tours. Tours are offered by college students that are giving the tours for a donation. You may also feel free to not take the guided tour and just walk around town on your own. I liked the thought of being guided by someone who actually grew up in the Pueblo, hearing their experiences and helping them out by giving them a donation for their time.
We started by taking a look through the chapel that is there, which was very lovely and had beautiful stained glass windows. Then we gathered on a small hill under a great big tree as the day was hot and the sun unforgiving. That is where we met our guide, Flowers, her given name. She began explaining the history of the Taos Pueblo and kept reminding us over and over of how the Indian history and the history of the white man did not match. She told of hunting and gathering in the mountains around Taos growing up, the lies of the white man through the history, brave indians fighting the white man, cruel white men murdering innocent indians, pretty much the same things I heard in school growing up. Not a proud time in our history, agreed. Yes I am white but I am only third generation American. This wasn’t my fault or the fault of my elders but we were looked at and talked to as if it were my great great grandfather that slaughtered the indians (her family) here on this pueblo. We were made to feel very uncomfortable. Flowers walked us through the small village, pointing out the old chapel where the elderly and children were hiding when the white man burned it to the ground killing everyone inside sometime in the 1800’s. Again she made numerous mentions of the lying, cheating, murderous white man and the true, honest, brave indians at the Pueblo.
As quickly as it had started the tour was over and we were told we could walk around the Pueblo and take pictures. This was wonderful because the buildings are historic and just gorgeous, the mountainous background is spectacular and the people living there for the most part were friendly. There are a lot of homes with signs out front saying that they are open and you can go in and buy snacks, pop, water, indian bread, arts and crafts etc. We found a woman making Indian Bread and sat down for a bite. It was delicious! She had powdered sugar, cinnamon/sugar and honey and it was amazing! She was friendly and the best part of the day.
Over all we enjoyed our visit to the Pueblo very much but I am not sure I would do it again or recommend it to anyone else. The bitterness shown by this college student was frightful. In no way do I think we should forget the monstroseties shown the indian people, the jews, or any other population but I think it is important to move forward, to show grace to one another and love for every race…red or yellow, black or white. Perpetuating the bitterness, anger, and hatred she has for the white man is distasteful at least. Through the entire tour she had a grim sour look on her face. I think there would have been a better way to explain the history of the Pueblo. Flowers smiled quite big when we handed her the money for the guided tour, so apparently it was okay to accept our white mans money while making us feel unwelcomed in her Pueblo. I truly pray that this is not the way the rest of the locals feel about us and as I drove away I wondered…is Flowers receiving any kind of benefits being able to study architecture at the university level that is only afforded her because of her indian heritage…I wonder if she is greatful or if she is just bitter all the time.
